CyberAgent, a streaming company that owns AbemaTV, one of the biggest streaming services in Japan, has purchased 100% ownership of the DDT promotion.
The belief is that the promotion will continue to be run by Sanshiro Takagi, but they now have backing of a currently cash-rich company.
The company officially announced the sale of DDT Pro Wrestling Co, Ltd. It noted that Takagi, who had been the owner and President, will continue on as President, but will report to Takehiro Yamauchi, a Director of CyberAgent Inc. who will become the Director of DDT Pro Wrestling.
The idea is to use the AbemaTV platform to push the promotion and its various subsidiaries to younger generation fans. DDT is a very different style of pro wrestling, far more comedy oriented than is seen in the US, although they have outstanding main event talent like Harashima and Konoske Takeshita, and both Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi, who are two of the best talents in the world, both made their original names in Japan with the promotion.
AbemaTV will air DDT and other tied-in companies that were on its new streaming platform like DNA, Basara, Tokyo Women’s wrestling, Ganbare and more. The first event on AbemaTV was the 9/24 show at Korakuen Hall.
AbemaTV broadcasts some old New Japan footage and is also home in Japan for UFC.
