Rey Mysterio shocked the wrestling world by appearing via video at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s New Beginning In Osaka event, issuing a challenge to Japanese legend Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger. Accepting the challenge immediately from his position at the commentary table, Liger will now face Mysterio at New Japan’s upcoming sold-out show Strong Style Evolved on March 25th in Long Beach, California.
Despite what Mysterio states in the video, it will actually not be the first time that he has wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling. He previously wrestled there in 1995 in a bonus match against Psicosis at the Super J Cup before being signed to WCW. He wrestled Jushin Liger the following year on WCW PPV, but this will only be the second meeting between the two legendary cruiserweights. After Mysterio’s surprise entry into the Royal Rumble earlier this year, everyone was expecting him to be winding down his independent appearances and rejoining WWE sometime soon, so this appearance for a major promotion has come as a massive surprise.
